Photos d’avant et apr\u00e8s au Ch\u00e2teau Feely<\/h1>\n

Si vous avez d\u00e9j\u00e0 lu les livres de Caro Feely<\/a><\/strong>, vous savez probablement que Caro et Sean Feely ont achet\u00e9 ce vignoble qui \u00e9tait en liquidation en 2005. La propri\u00e9t\u00e9 n’\u00e9tait pas en bon \u00e9tat et en partie en ruine. Chaque ann\u00e9e, quand le budget le permet, les Feely restaurent certaines parties de ce havre de paix avec passion.<\/p>\n

Dans cet article, Caro vous montre quelques photos des archives ainsi qu’un passage du livre Grape Expectations (disponible qu’en anglais) quand 2 amis, Helen et Derek Melser ont fait un peu d’\u00e9lagage dans la broussaille et la for\u00eat, puis nous avons d\u00e9couvert le b\u00e2timent qui deviendrait dans le futur le Wine Lodge.<\/p>\n

Salle de d\u00e9gustation – avant\/apr\u00e8s<\/p>\n

\"\" Nous avons du faire preuve d’imagination! La premi\u00e8re ann\u00e9e nous avions fait de la place \u00e0 gauche (premi\u00e8re photo) afin de cr\u00e9er une salle de d\u00e9gustation. C’\u00e9tait un effort d’\u00e9quipe comme vous pouvez le voir ci-dessous – Sophia qui aidait Caro \u00e0 nettoyer les d\u00e9bris. Un voisin nous avait aid\u00e9 \u00e0 refaire la toiture, remettre une nouvelle fen\u00eatre et porte. Quelques temps apr\u00e8s, nous avons am\u00e9nag\u00e9 la terrasse qui deviendrait 5 ans apr\u00e8s la salle de d\u00e9gustation (2e photo).<\/p>\n

Pour les anglophones, voici un extrait de Grape Expectations qui raconte le moment o\u00f9 nous avons fait la d\u00e9couverte de cette ruine (photo \u00e0 gauche ci-dessus). Nous ne savions m\u00eame pas que la 2e ruine existait (fl\u00e8che indiquant \u00ab\u00a0lodge\u00a0\u00bb). La fl\u00e8che \u00ab\u00a0tasting room\u00a0\u00bb indique l\u00e0 o\u00f9 se trouve la salle de d\u00e9gustation \u00e0 l’heure actuelle.<\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Helen and Derek, friends from New Zealand, arrived.\u00a0<\/span>Helen was blonde with wonderful apple cheeks, the look of a happy chef and a gift for creating gourmet delights. Derek was witty and wiry. He had a doctorate from MIT, but preferred to spend his days making furniture or growing olives on their smallholding.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018We want to clear the brush around the cliffs near the hangar,’ said Derek. ‘It looks like a satisfying job. I think it will take about three days.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018How will you do it?\u2019 asked Sean, lifting his chin off the ground. <\/span>We had looked at the wall of brush that Derek was referring to and decided it was not a job for a man, rather for a very large machine. The ‘brush’ was at least 5 metres deep, 3 metres high and about 100 metres long. <\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018With your chainsaw that I saw in the shed. I\u2019ll cut it down with the chainsaw, Helen will help me pull it out, then we\u2019ll burn it.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Derek had sussed out the brush and done an inventory of our tools. <\/span><\/p>\n

The next day when I went down to give them a hand they had already uncovered the first section of a magnificent amphitheatre of white cliffs that had been a quarry hundreds of years before. Derek cut back swathes of plant matter then Helen dragged the trees and brush out to feed the bonfire. They were a phenomenal team. Some of the brambles were as thick as a man\u2019s arm and 50 metres long. <\/span><\/p>\n

When Sean came up from pruning and saw what they had done he said, \u2018We\u2019re wimps.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

On the third day they moved up to the section on top of the cliff. This dense wall of growth ran from the tasting room to the far side of the winery. From the vineyard below we could see there was something on the back of the winery, perhaps old rabbit cages. Sean and I had tried to reach it by cutting a path through the brush and failed. <\/span><\/p>\n

It was like Sleeping Beauty\u2019s forest, impenetrable. Or so I thought.<\/span><\/p>\n

That evening Sean called me with excitement. \u2018Come and look, Caro!\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

Around the side of the tasting room, a magnificent view had opened up, and the building wasn\u2019t old rabbit cages: it was a solid stone structure on two levels of 20 square metres each. To the side of it were two low stone buildings. My mind raced off, imagining all sorts of options for this new find.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018Is the building on the <\/span>cadastrale<\/i><\/span>?\u2019 asked our friend Tim, a retired engineer who knew all about building in France.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018I don\u2019t know.\u2019 We had a copy of the <\/span>cadastrale<\/i><\/span>, or commune map, of our property which included all the official buildings, but I hadn\u2019t thought to look at it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2018If it is you should get planning permission more easily.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n

As soon as I got off the phone I checked the <\/span>cadastrale<\/i><\/span> and found the ruin on it. I was over the moon with excitement.\u00a0\u00bb<\/span><\/p>\n

Toutes ces nouvelles nous ont permi de planifier la prochaine \u00e9tape, la nouvelle salle de d\u00e9gustation et le g\u00eete Wine Lodge<\/a><\/strong> – qui fait partie de l’histoire du 2e livre Saving Our Skins<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

La maison principale – dans l’arri\u00e8re plan des 2 photos ci-dessus, est une maison forte du 17 et 18e si\u00e8cle. Elle avait \u00e9t\u00e9 recouverte de b\u00e9ton mais maintenant elle d\u00e9voile ses pierres magnifiques avec les volets bleus dans l’esprit \u00ab\u00a0garrigue\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

La plus vieille partie de la maison, qui est la cuisine, servait de poste de surveillance durant le 14e si\u00e8cle. Elle est construite au-dessus du vieux cellier du 9e si\u00e8cle.<\/p>\n

Pendant une p\u00e9riode aussi \u00e9trange que celle que nous vivons en ce moment, cela fait du bien de se rem\u00e9morer les avanc\u00e9es de notre projet. Merci \u00e0 tous ceux qui nous ont soutenu et aid\u00e9 dans la progression de cette aventure.<\/p>\n

Le plus important est la r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9ration des terres – un h\u00e9ritage que nous laissons aux futures g\u00e9n\u00e9rations, un h\u00e9ritage pour l’humanit\u00e9, de restauration, r\u00e9g\u00e9n\u00e9ration, revitalisation \u00e0 travers l’agriculture biologique et biodynamique, plut\u00f4t que d’empoisonner nos sols. Les r\u00e9sultats de ce travail l\u00e0 est plus difficilement perceptible qu’une r\u00e9novation de maison, mais il est visible \u00e0 travers la bonne sant\u00e9 de nos vignes et les ar\u00f4mes de nos vins biodynamiques et nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n
