Festive Season Vegetarian Vegan Food and Wine Pairing
It is coming up to the time of festive events and popping corks. With the days shortening, the vineyard becomes a place of quiet reflection of being one with nature. In the evenings we meditate with a deep rich red wine next to the hearth, appreciating the miracle of sunlight, water and photosynthesis in every bottle.
In this article I share recommendations for wine pairings for festive vegetarian and vegan food. Being vegetarian or eating more plant based foods is also an important gesture for the environment. All Feely wines are vegan friendly.
Recommendations for wine pairings for festive vegetarian and vegan food
To begin the celebrations, canapes of sun-dried tomato pesto vegan pinwheels – phyllo-pastry flavour bursts of toasted almonds, basil and tomato go particularly well with sparkling wines like Feely Selection Brut Blanc. Any salty snacks, even simple crisps, or salted nuts would work as vegan aperos.
Pro-sommelier tip: keep your hands on the cork to protect everyone and everything around you. As soon as you begin twisting the wire cage off the bottle of bubbly, keep a firm hand over the cork. Accidents from flying corks are frequent around new year.
Festive Vegan Starters
For starters, an appetite-lifting salad such as a beetroot, walnut and pomegranate arils with tahini-honey drizzle. Arils are the jewel-like fruit inside the pomegranate, best fresh. This salad pairs well with the bright light red like Feely Vivacite Cabernet Sauvignon.
An alternative warm starter would be potimarron, ginger and chestnut soup with fresh coriander, garlicky croutons and orange wine like Feely Mille Fleurs.
Festive Vegetarian and Vegan Main Course Wine Pairings
Proceeding onto the main course, a rich mushroom, walnut, wellington served with brussels sprouts, steamed broccoli, and/or pan-fried miso-infused kale. This would be ideal with an aged Bordeaux-style red that is developing wonderful forest floor and truffle notes. Anything older than 2020 would work. We have Feely vintages going back to 2016, available – see Resonance 2016, Resonance 2019 and Grace 2019.
Festive vegan and vegetarian dessert suggestions
For dessert, Nigella’s vegan chocolate cake – dark and sumptuous – or vegan Florentines pair well with a noble-rot sweet wine like an organic Saussignac sweet wine (we can ship this wine email us for details). For a more unusual option with flaky pastry vegetarian mince pies try a red wine like Feely La Source red or Resonance Red .
