We’ll explore some of the reality of climate change, the urgency of taking action, and the reasons why we can and must. We’ll have a Q&A to chat with others on the call. We will achieve this transformation if everyone is informed and motivated to take their individual and collective responsibility. It is up to all of us. It is totally acceptable to bring a glass of wine along. 😉
We have seen dramatic floods, wild fires and storms affect almost every corner of our planet this past year.
It was a scary time recently (starting 24 July 2026) with fires out of control near Bordeaux. 27 July marked a major turnaround. Early Sunday morning (26 July 2026) there were around 1500 fires with a total power of more than 11 000 MW – absolutely terrifying – (photo above taken on Sunday morning when the smoke was at its worst) – as of early Monday morning (this morning 27 July) the firefighters had it down to less than 60 fires with a total power of less than 80 MW. What an incredible effort and what a relief.
So much smoke rolled in on Friday night that we thought it was a local fire. Sean brought the farm sprayer set up with 1000 litres of water near the houses (given the high fire risk Sean already had it filled and ready before the fires even started) while I attached hosepipes on all the taps. It felt that close and frightening. Like many other locals we offered our spare beds to those who needed to get out of Bordeaux. More than 200 000 people were evacuated -the biggest evacuation in France since WW2.
We are so grateful to the firefighters – and the farmers – and everyone who provided support to the fire service and all the countries that came to aid the effort including Croatia, Switzerland, South Africa and many more. But with the dry conditions we remain vigilant. And we cannot forget what this means about our future.
We have to act now and dramatically. If you think it is impossible take a look at this article from 2021 by George Monbiot ‘Transformation in months has been done before. If we get the right leadership and sense of global community spirit anything is possible.
Given the importance of having climate conversations NOW we have put Cultivating Change on a price special on amazon (from €2.99/ 1.99 GBP) from now to the end of August. The print version of the book (easier to share and give as a gift) is now in groundwood paper (lower CO2 and lighter) and set to a lower price too – from 11.99 euro/ USD / 8.99 GBP.
Yes, when we look at the reality of the climate crisis and how little humanity has done so far to address it, you could feel depressed and anxious. But it is crucial that we are not depressed but rather motivated to sort it out. We cannot rely on the politicians who are having a great time blah blah blah ‘ing as Greta Thunberg pointed out long ago – before COP26 (we are now on COP31). We have to engage as citizens to put pressure on them and not forget the horrifying scenes we are witnessing. Over the last month the heatwaves and wild fires have brought home the urgency of addressing this most existential issue of our time.
Join Caro Feely to make sense of it at an online event Friday August 14, 2026 6PM Paris / 5pm Dublin & London
