Vine Flowering in 2026
Grape vine flowering is a moment of privilege and grace. The vineyard is filled with divine aromas. And a dash of angst.
Every grape in every glass of wine you’ve ever loved began with a vine flower. A fleeting moment. Each tiny cream flower is five stamens circling a single stigma — the male parts doing their best to reach the female.
The vineyard, in late May, is erotic. The scent drifting between the vines is magical : honeysuckle, hops, the aroma of a newborn. And a touch of winegrower sweat.
The little green caps you see on the buds that haven’t flowered yet – they should pop off to release the stamens. But in wet weather the cap gets stuck — no pollination, no grapes. In high winds the pollen blows away — no pollination, no grapes. In extreme heat they abort. You get the picture. The vintage balances on fine weather at flowering. We’re holding our breath.
