Vintage La Source- a selection of library wines

Chateau Feely launches the Vintage Box – for special moments of celebration

The Vintage box is a very special selection of Feely La Source vintages from our private cellar and the current available vintages. We have dug into the past vintages that have been carefully stored in the private cellar under the house – home to walls that date back to around 800CE when the monastery of Saussignac/ Monestier was established – a place that offers perfect storage conditions.

We have selected 6 vintages to give you an interesting vertical selection – these wines are only available as part of this mixed box set – we dont have enough to sell cases of the individual vintages (except of the ’16 and ’18 which are both part of the current range and can be reordered as individual boxes). All the La Source wines are handpicked and barrel aged.

Feely La Source 2007

Merlot 80%/ Cabernet sauvignon 10% / Cabernet Franc 10%

Tasting note June 2020 – La Source 2007 is a still so fresh. We loved it when we bottled it and we love it now. Medium plus acidity and smooth tannins. The perfect word to describe it is ‘elegant’. Pomegranate, strawberry, fresh cassis, a hint of mint, followed by a long finish of cassis and touch of spice.

Feely La Source 2009

Merlot 80%/ Cabernet sauvignon 10% / Cabernet Franc 10%

Tasting note June 2020 – 2009 was a hot and fabulous vintage across the greater region. The La Source 2009 is still rich with hints of chocolate cherry, dark fruit and spice. Christmas plum pudding, touch of mint, earthy note mixed spice and a hint of mint. This vintage is carrying off its 11 years of age with class despite lower acidity than more classic vintages.

Feely La Source 2011

Merlot 80%/ Cabernet sauvignon 20%

The La Source 2011 was handpicked, hand destemmed and punched down by hand instead of pumped over. A fine, complex wine with pronounced cassis (black currant) notes and a hint of cassis leaf. We added nitrogen at bottling to decrease our sulfites so it is a little petillant when first opened. We recommend doing the Feely shake. Open the bottle pour a glass out. Cork it and give it a good shake. Take cork off, let gas escape. Do it again 5 times at least. That should remove the petillance and aerate the wine at the same time.

Feely La Source 2014

Merlot 80%/ Cabernet sauvignon 20%

here’s the tasting note from JancisRobinson.com Drink 2017-23 Rated 17/20

Certified Ecocert organic and Demeter biodynamic. Hand harvested, indigenous yeast, barrel aged in French oak, unfined, unfiltered. No sulphites added. 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon.

‘Hints of ruby in the blackish purple colour. Juniper and glorious dark fruit on the nose, plump, intense and hinting at liquorice.  Palpable tension on the palate and a minerality that almost seems to glitter like flecks of mica set in granite. Sooty tannins that turn to the texture of chamois leather as the wine opens, and an earthiness just this side of wild. Fallen petals. Lifted camphor freshness explodes on the end. (TC)’

Feely La Source 2016

Merlot 80%/ Cabernet sauvignon 20%

Medium ruby. Deep dark fruit, blackberry, plum, a hint of sweet spice and liquorice. Palate – acidity: medium and tannin: medium. Attack is rich but fresh, mid palate dark fruit, blackberry, touch of liquorice and finish of dark berries, and a note of freshness. Salinity and slight chalkiness on upper palate after fruit flavour is passed telling us about the limestone. 2016 was a fabulous vintage, generous in both flavour and volume. A total of 2400 bottles produced from the limestone plateau parcels of merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Natural fermentation followed by barrel aging- bottled April 2019.

It pairs well with duck breast and lamb but could also pair with beef. Discover a favourite duck recipe to serve with La Source (or Grace) For vegetarian pairings we recommend hearty dishes like a red kidney bean stew. Age for upto 10 years from vintage (to 2026). Serve at 16-18 deg.

Feely La Source 2018

Merlot 70%/ Cabernet sauvignon 30%

Medium purple / ruby. Explosion of fresh dark fruit, fresh blackberry, dark fruit, plum, sweet spice. Acidity: medium plus. Tannin: medium plus. Attack is fresh, mid palate blackberry, hint of blackcurrant, sweet spice and a long finish of dark fruit and a touch of liquorice.

La Source is a St Emilion style blend aged in French oak, the 2018 has a little more cabernet sauvignon than previous vintages. It has the usual dark fruit notes of a typical la source vintage but also lovely fresh notes with a hint of red fruit like raspberry and cassis thanks to the extra touch of cabernet.

3700 bottles from the plateau and east-facing hillside merlot vineyards and the cabernet sauvignon at the entrance to the property. Natural fermentation followed by 18 months in French oak barrels. Age for up to 10 years (to 2028). Serve at 16-18 deg.
